Voltage-Fed Converters
Engineering reference on Voltage-Fed Converters for wireless power system design, integration, and deployment.
6 minArticle 27/50Power Electronics
Voltage-fed converters connect a low-impedance DC bus through a bridge to the resonant network. Nearly all commercial AGV wireless charging docks use this structure because control intuition, PFC integration, and literature on resonant WPT align with voltage excitation.
The DC link capacitor supplies fast current pulses; its ESR and ESL affect ripple and EMI.
01Characteristics
- Coil voltage waveform approximates controlled square or sinusoidal excitation from bridge output filtering.
- Load changes reflect back as current draw on the DC bus — easy to monitor for fault detection.
- Requires attention to shoot-through but not open-circuit voltage multiplication like current-fed.
02Design center
Size DC link for peak coil power and allowable ripple. Place bulk and ceramic caps close to switch legs. Coordinate inverter modulation with resonant compensation so input impedance stays manageable for PFC.
03Fleet default
- Document as reference topology for integrators and spare parts.
- Train field service on DC bus discharge before opening pad enclosures.
- Monitor bus voltage sag as indicator of weak facility supply or cap aging.
