Overcurrent Protection
Engineering reference on Overcurrent Protection for wireless power system design, integration, and deployment.
6 minArticle 42/50Power Electronics
Overcurrent protection prevents device destruction and fire when the receiver shorts, coupling surges, or control demands excessive coil current. Layers include hardware comparators, driver fault pins, fuse coordination, and firmware foldback.
WPT adds ambiguity — inrush into resonant tank can look like fault without proper blanking.
01Settings
- Peak trip for instantaneous shoot-through or dead short.
- Average or RMS limit for sustained overload during misalignment.
- Coordination with transmitter power control when receiver requests reduction.
02Timing
Blanking during known inrush events at startup. Different limits during pre-alignment communication versus full power. Latch versus retry policy — AGV docks often auto-retry once after cooldown.
03Validation
- Fault injection on production units: output short, partial short, saturated control.
- Verify fuse or breaker does not nuisance-trip on normal docking transient.
